We’re all searching. Sometimes the search is easy: simply type a question and the answer pops up. But sometimes our questions are complicated, and the answers are difficult to see and harder to articulate. How do we discover and examine the truths that give meaning and purpose to life? The Apostles’ Creed, an early statement of foundational Christian beliefs, contains some powerful answers.
This is what Adam has to say about Creed: In some ways it is my attempt to do what C.S. Lewis did in 1943 with Mere Christianity – to help Christians understand what they believe, but even more importantly, to make the case for Christian faith for those who have doubts or questions.
I use the Apostles’ Creed as a way of looking at the essential tenants of Christianity and then look at how we make sense of these things in our modern world, and why these beliefs still matter. As I wrote it I was thinking of the many young adults who grew up in church but no longer attend.
Chapters include:
• God
• Jesus Christ
• The Holy Spirit
• The Church and the Communion of Saints
• The Forgiveness of Sin
• The Resurrection of the Body
This Youth Study Book takes the ideas presented in Adam Hamilton’s book and interprets them for young people grades 6-12. Includes leader helps with discussion questions and can be used with the adult-level DVD.
Easter from the Back Side
J. Ellsworth Kalas
Using an approach similar to the one he took in Parables from the Back Side and other books in the popular Back Side series, author J. Ellsworth Kalas opens up new possibilities of insight into the biblical Easter story. The author looks beyond the traditional gospel scriptures to connect the story of Christ’s resurrection with other stories and scriptures throughout the Bible, including both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Kalas’s creative approach both clarifies basic teachings and introduces new possibilities of meaning, even for those who are most familiar with the Easter story. Enriched with contemporary illustrations and personal experiences, this volume will provide new perspectives on Easter.
Chapter titles and Scriptures include: “Why We Need Easter” (Genesis 3:1-7, 22-24); “Easter from an Ash Heap” (Job 19:13-27); “Easter for the Disillusioned” (Ecclesiastes 2:14-26); “Ezekiel Celebrates Easter” (Ezekiel 37:1-10); “Easter Is a Love Story” (John 20:1-18); “Late for Easter” (1 Corinthians 15:1-11); and “Forever Easter” (Revelation 21:1-4).
J. ELLSWORTH KALAS is president of Asbury Theological Seminary and has been part of the faculty there since 1993, after thirty-eight years as a United Methodist pastor and five years in evangelism with the World Methodist Council. He has been a presenter on Disciple videos, is the author of the Christian Believer study, and has written more than thirty books, including the popular Back Side series; Longing to Pray: How the Psalms Teach Us to Talk with God; Strong Was Her Faith: Women of the New Testament; and What I Learned When I Was Ten.
In 24 Hours That Changed the World, Adam Hamilton took us on a Lenten journey through the last day of Jesus' life. Now, in his inspiring follow-up book, Hamilton examines Christ’s dying hours and his final words as seen and heard through the eyes and ears of those who stood near the cross.
This small-group study DVD contains seven teaching sessions featuring Hamilton providing fresh insight into Jesus’ final words at the cross through the perspective of those who witnessed the crucifixion. Then, he moves beyond the cross to Jesus' words to the disciples on the road to Emmaus and to those who were witnesses to the Resurrection.
The enclosed Leader Guide will facilitate small-group discussion about the book and the DVD. Final Words from the Cross offers six chapters/sessions plus a postscript chapter/session, so that classes have the option of a seventh session on Easter Sunday.
Session 1: Father Forgive Them
Session 2: Behold Your Son…Behold Your Mother
Session 3: My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?
Session 4: Today You Will Be with Me in Paradise
Session 5: I Thirst
Session 6: It Is Finished...Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit
Session 7: On the Road to Emmaus
